Distortion Pedals: Gain, EQ and Headroom That Fit the Mix
A useful distortion sound survives chords, single notes and the rest of the band at the level you actually play.

Start below noon and raise gain while playing complete chords, double-stops and single-note lines. Note when low strings blur and when pick attack disappears. The widest usable range is often more valuable than the most extreme endpoint.
Compare with the amplifier at matched loudness. Extra high-frequency content can create an immediate impression while becoming tiring in a mix.
Use EQ to claim a frequency lane
A single tone control may pivot lows and highs together; multi-band EQ offers more correction but adds interaction. Check whether midrange is fixed, sweepable or absent from the controls.
The guitar should occupy space around vocals, bass and cymbals rather than sound complete only in isolation. Test through the speaker or cabinet simulation used in production.
Plan for switching and noise
High gain raises pickup, supply and environmental noise. Test the pedal with hands off the strings, then with the guitar volume down, to distinguish sources.
If switching between rhythm and lead, confirm whether the pedal offers enough output lift after clipping. A separate boost after distortion may produce a clearer level increase.
