Which Pedals Belong in an Amplifier Effects Loop?
The effects loop places pedals after the amplifier preamp and before its power section. That is useful when the preamp supplies distortion.

If the amplifier stays clean, delay and reverb at the input can already receive a clean signal. If the preamp creates heavy distortion, placing them in the loop keeps repeats and ambience after that clipping stage and often improves definition.
Modulation can work in either position. Chorus before preamp gain blends into the drive; chorus in the loop modulates the driven preamp sound more clearly.
Check level and loop design
Read whether the loop is series or parallel, buffered or unbuffered, and designed around instrument or line level. Some pedals clip or become noisy when a hot loop send exceeds their input range.
Parallel loops can create phase or dry-path interactions when a pedal also passes dry signal. A kill-dry option or a series loop may be needed for fully wet processing.
Wire and troubleshoot in stages
Test one known-good pedal between send and return with short cables. Set its output near unity, then add devices one at a time. This isolates level mismatch, cable failure and ground noise.
Keep the loop cable run in the board layout and transport plan. Four extra plugs and two long cables can change power, buffer and noise decisions.
